Senior Staff

Robert Grothe
2004-2008. Now at Thermo. Rob Grothe is developing mathematical methods to identify the proteins contained in blood samples using Fourier-transform mass spectrometry (FTMS). The approach draws on Rob's doctoral training in the Electronic Systems and Signals Research Laboratory (ESSRL) at Washington University in St. Louis. In ESSRL, diverse problems like MRI and radar imaging are addressed by determining the particular instance of an object (e.g. a protein) that maximizes the likelihood of observing the given data. Identifying more proteins more accurately is crucial in using FTMS to deliver personalized medicine.

Michael Thompson

2007. Michael Thompson completed his undergraduate training in High Energy Physics at Boston University. He obtained his PhD in Biophysics from the University of Michigan where he developed approaches for predicting protein structure and for modelling protein folding and protein evolution. He conducted his postdoctoral research at UCLA in the Eisenberg laboratory where he investigated the molecular determinants of protein thermostability based on comparative genomics analyses. Following this, Michael cofounded a privately-held biotech firm, Protein Pathways, Inc., a forerunner in the application of genomics and proteomics methods and technologies to the discovery and development of human therapeutics. Prior to joining the Center for Applied Proteomics, Michael returned to UCLA as visiting research faculty where he made inroads into understanding the molecular determinants of amyloid disease.

Imelda De Vera
2005-2006. Imelda has been working on her D.O. at Michigan State where she was recently elected president of the Sigma Sigma Phi honor society. Imelda graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a B.S. in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology in Spring 2003. After graduating, she joining the SFCAP as a laboratory research assistant where she was involved in all aspects of sample preparation and MS analysis.
Jason Lee
2005-2006.

Kristen Lee
2006-2007. At UCSD School of Medicine as of August 2007. Kristen Lee graduated from UCLA in 2006 with B.S. in biochemistry, and is currently working at the SFCAP as a research associate. In addition to running mass spectrometers and preparing samples she has been working exploring the HER-Kinase axis and also methods for bioconjugation.

Sachin Gandhi
2006-2007. At Medical School as of August 2007. Sachin graduated from UCLA in Spring 2006 with a B.S. in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology. Although trained as a biologist, his work at SFCAP has exposed him to chemistry and biochemistry techniques as well, as his main responsibilities include sample preparation and MS analysis.
